Please pardon the dust, we're still settling things around here. You can find a raw list of all (and potentially very, very old) music under Music Downloads. On this page, I'll present some highlights and recent works.

C64 Song

(c) 2009 Josef Jahn [Download MP3]

My modded C64 at work
IMG 8932.JPG

When we talk about the C64, there's definitely a unique quality to the sound of a real, physical device - something that simply cannot be duplicated by software emulation. For that reason, I set out to get one of these old home computers (which was one of my previously unfulfilled childhood dreams btw.), MIDIfy it courtesy of MSSIAH, and mod it to become part of my musical setup. This song is the first thing I did right after I closed the case and powered it on.

Althought I've never had a C64 as a child I did fool around with them and oh yes, there's nostalgia involved. At the same time I don't think C64 music has to sound the way it did 20 years ago. Hence I took some liberties here, enriching the mix with careful doses of machinedrum goodness and injected some Virii. It's true what they say: The real C64 sounds alive. No two plays of the same piece are 100% identical and it's this margin of error, along with the simple fact that the SID can sound wonderfully fat and rich, that makes many people believe in hardware over emulation. I was sceptical when I started this little project, but now I'm a believer - and I intend to squeeze even more sound out of the ol' box in the future!

Equipment: C64, Fantom G6, Virus TI, Machinedrum.

Timelapse

(c) 2009 Josef Jahn

A short piece to complement a timelapse animation of our local RC airfield. Warm Fantom EP sounds meet searing hot leads by the Virus.

Equipment: Fantom G6, Virus TI, Machinedrum.

Sequenced entirely on the Fantom, LeadOn was yet another learning experience using a different workflow, not to mention a new keyboard workstation. It's a playful, jazzy piece of electronica.

Equipment: Access Virus TI, Elektron Machinedrum, Roland Fantom G6

Viral Exercise 1

[Download MP3] (c) 2006 Josef Jahn

Second exercise, using only a Virus TI and nothing else (other than a sequencer). First time I worked with Renoise.

Made for the anniversary of planettribes.com, the inofficial hymn for Starsiege Tribes!

Winter Landscape

[Download MP3] [Download ImpulseTracker IT] (c) 2001 Josef Jahn

This is an example of how my older music sounds. It probably appeals to fans of tracker-based music. Made with Roland D50 and Modplug Tracker

An old song inspired by Jon Sleeper's "Titanic" novel. Made with Roland D50 and FastTracker II
